Decision Making

Choosing from values rather than from state.

Ruach educational content

The quality of a decision is strongly affected by the state it was made in. Urgency, exhaustion, and fear all reliably shrink the option set.

Ruach's rule of thumb: if a decision can wait until you are regulated, it should. If it cannot, take ninety seconds first anyway.

Scripture

Quoted verbatim (King James Version, public domain). The notes beneath each passage are Ruach's educational commentary, not Scripture.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Ruach context: written to a younger colleague facing intimidation. The Greek term rendered 'fear' here denotes timidity or cowardice rather than the emotion of being afraid.

Ruach application: this is not a rebuke for feeling afraid. It names what to act from — clarity and love rather than intimidation.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Ruach context: addressed to a community under pressure, immediately after a passage about endurance.

Ruach application: asking is presented as normal, not as evidence of failure.

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Ruach context: instruction framed as a parent teaching a child, using the language of acquisition over time.

Ruach application: 'get' implies effort and accumulation. Wisdom here is gathered, not downloaded in a moment.
